The importance of choosing the right tone of foundation for your client cannot be overstated enough. Always be aware of the lighting you are working in and also the position of that lighting. Most companies now manufacture foundations in warm, neutral and cool tones. Red and pink undertones are cool and yellow or golden undertones are considered warm. Always apply it from the jaw line onto the neck to test the colour match. If the colour difference isn't visible than you've got the right foundation. Remember a foundation's purpose is not to change the colour of the skin. To warm the skin use your shaders and blushers! Welcome to our blog. Here you will find helpful tips and hints on learning in the beauty  and hairdressing industry. Learning a new skill or knowledge can be time consuming and take from other areas of your life temporarily but remember it is only temporary and will be worth it when you hold your qualification in your hand.

Practical exams can be nerve wrecking. Remember your final exam is your opportunity to show the examiner what you know. So my advice is to imagine you're in the room on your own with your own client. Inform your client of every step so your examiner can hear you. Talk to your client about other treatments you would recommend and retail product that may be of benefit to them. Discuss ingredients of products with your client so they understand the benefit of them.

Exams….So many beauty and hairdressing students are coming up that time of year when exams will be spoken about more and more often. Please don’t panic if you’ve been a bit relaxed about study until now. It’s not too late. Take a system or a skill per week and concentrate on practicing it at home. When you think you’ve perfected it….practice some more!! Use flash cards to help memorise information keep them simple and small and take bundles of them with you so if you’re in a waiting room you can flick through them. I cannot tell you enough how valuable flash cards can be. There will be more about memorising techniques in future blogs

So the new year has arrived and you feel you’d like a change or simply to do something different for you. If you’re considering a course in the beauty or hair industry then please consider a few of the pointers below.

Cost: This is often the determining factor of which course someone will enrol in. We all want value for money but make sure you are getting just that. Sometimes you can find that fees weren’t too expensive but it’s the hidden extras that can cripple you such as kit or exam fees. So save yourself hassle and ask from the beginning.

Kit. Always ensure you know exactly what’s in your kit. If you’re doing beauty therapy, does this include a make- up kit? What quality is your kit? Ensure pigments in the make- up kit for example are long lasting. Are disposables (cotton pads, couch roll, ear buds) supplied by the college or will it be your responsibility? Students replacing consumables is perfectly normal practice but ensure you understand this from the beginning

Exam fees.  Are they extra and when do they need to be paid.

Qualification: Do your research. Will your qualification be recognised worldwide if you decide to travel? Talk to professionals in the industry….if they were to hire you what qualification would they like to see you with?

Facilities: In order to learn successfully then your basic needs should be met. Go and check out your potential new college. Are there proper kitchen facilities, dining facilities and toilets? What products are used? Is the facility well heated and well ventilated. How much natural light is there?

Policies: All colleges will have a list of policies dealing with appeals procedures etc. This will include a list of rules laid out be the college which you will be expected to read and sign. Please read them carefully and remember these rules are there so everyone can learn in a safe environment.
